James Kirdy

Obituary of James S Kirdy

Jim Kirdy, beloved husband, father, and retired law enforcement officer, passed away on March 24, 2024. He was 59 years old. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 34 years, Yvonne, and his two loving sons, Josh and Jonathan. Born on November 21, 1964 in New Bedford, Massachusetts and eventually moving to Southwest Florida, Jim found his calling early on in life dedicating over 35 years to serving and protecting his community as a Law Enforcement Officer. He began his long career with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office and eventually ended it with the Desoto County Sheriff’s Office. However, it was with the Punta Gorda Police Department where he spent most of his time rising through the ranks and retiring in 2013 as Detective Lieutenant. During his tenure with the Punta Gorda Police Department he led the dive team through search and rescue missions across Charlotte Harbor, Peace River, and miles of Punta Gorda canals successfully recovering evidence and locating missing persons. Jim’s expertise as a scuba diver extended beyond local waters working with law enforcement agencies nationwide teaching critical tactics and even authoring articles for international scuba diving publications. In addition to his remarkable work as a diver, Jim proudly served as a K-9 officer, worked marine patrol on the water, and bike patrol around the city. Finally, his leadership in the criminal investigations department led to the resolution of numerous cold cases, bringing closure and justice to members of the community he served. Beyond his day-to-day roles, he spent time actively engaging in community and youth programs. His legacy of service and integrity will forever be remembered by those who knew him. A public viewing is planned for Tuesday, April 2nd, from 5pm to 7pm, immediately followed by a funeral service and celebration of life at Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home. The Kirdy family is passionate about raising further awareness of the immense emotional trauma endured by the bravery of first responders. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to COPLINE.org (1-800-COPLINE), a non-profit organization dedicated to providing confidential mental health services to active and retired law enforcement officers and their loved ones.
